Life science venture Everyplace Labs has joined a slew of start-ups flocking to Lake County to tap into talent and grow. At Rosalind Franklin University's Helix 51 incubator, the early-stage company has developed a revolutionary new kiosk that employers can use to administer onsite rapid tests for illnesses like COVID. Through exciting partnerships with local companies, Everyplace Labs is beta-testing the groundbreaking technology, which is targeted to be considered for FDA and EUA approval and go to market next year.

Access  and equity are two cornerstones of Comcast’s service model. How does Comcast ensure that Lake County has adequate coverage for businesses and residents?

Lake County has Internet access in over 99% of its area. Comcast is a big part of that with nearly 7,500 miles of fiber-dense network providing residential download speeds up to 1.2 Gigabits per second (Gbps) in all the communities and neighborhoods we serve across Lake County, download speeds up to 100 Gbps for businesses and more than 120,000 WiFi hotspots.

Comcast has been committed to closing the digital divide since 2011, when we launched Internet Essentials, a program that provides low-cost Internet service at home to eligible low-income families. The program has connected more than 1.3 million Illinois residents, including thousands in Lake County, to the internet at home since it launched.

How is the new Comcast RISE program providing opportunities for businesses owned by people of color and women?

Comcast RISE was created to help small businesses owned by people of color survive the pandemic and thrive in the future. The program recently expanded to include all women-owned businesses. To date, Comcast RISE has supported more than 600 businesses in the region. Read about the incredible local impact of the program in our new blog post.

You served on the steering committee that oversaw the development of the Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) for Lake County. What do you see as Lake County’s biggest strengths and opportunities?

Lake County is strategically advanced in all phases of its planning for economic growth and sustainability. The county has an engaged workforce that can take advantage of education and training opportunities. Lake County is committed to ensuring that those opportunities exist for all. How do you enjoy Lake County in your free time?

I spend a lot of time outdoors enjoying our beautiful Lake County Forest Preserves.
